Anthropometrics

This article shows dimensions and clearances of an adult human body of average build and its relationship to the built environment. This data should help you design with minimum space provisions while planning space layouts or furnishing. You should increase or decrease the clearances mentioned herein when the person in consideration is either larger or smaller than average. Note: All Dimensions are in MM.

Human Proportions & Dimensional Relationships
Proportional relationship of some human body parts with respect to the total height 'h' is given below:

1/2 h the whole of the top half of the body, from the crotch upwards
1/4 h leg length from the ankle to the knee and from the chin to the navel
1/6 h length of foot
1/8 h head length from the hair parting to the bottom of the chin, distance between the nipples
1/10 h = face height and width (including the ears). hand length to the wrist
1/12 h = face width at the level of the bottom of the nose, leg width (above the ankle) and so on.

Dimensional Relationships - Dining Space
'C' shown in the figure above is the recommended minimum for passage behind a seated person. In case of serving from behind a seated person, the recommended clearance would be 1100. Similarly the space for getting up and leaving the seat when seated in an arm chair would around 850 (min)
